STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS and DESIGN

MechSim uses commercial Finite Element Analysis tools to conduct structural analysis of transportation related hardware and systems.  Our consultants have depth of experience in traditional linear analysis, weld strength and crack-growth analysis, composite materials, and design optimization.  We work very closely with our clients engineering team to formulate the analysis approach, boundary and load conditions, and design optimization goals.  In many cases, we use our multibody dynamics capability to help determine loads to be applied to the structural models.  Below are some examples of our structural analysis projects.

CROP Flatrack on 463L “Triple Married Pallets” on K-Loader Roller Bed

MechSim used finite element analysis to predict the load distribution for a loaded CROP platform sitting on three flexible 463-L pallets, sitting on a bed of uneven K-loader rollers.  The images below show CROP geometry and rails, a 463L pallet (aluminum skin on balsa core), NASTRAN FEA mesh, and the resulting predicted roller load distribution.

Boeing TSV Cargo Handling System
- Restraint Track Analysis

Mechsim used traditional FEA analysis to facilitate successful design of the cargo handling system employed on the new Army TSV ships.  The tracks are welded to the deck and the restraint rails and locks lock into place with high-strength tabs.  The first image shows a section of track, rail, and two locking devices.  The second image shows a cross section of the track and rail with loading conditions.  The third image shows the loads transferred to the track and the final image shows a typical stress contour plot for the track.
